The East Coast Challenge Cup came into being after a meeting between members of the Greater Sydney Tenpin Bowling Association and the Melbourne Tenpin Bowling Association. The meeting was held at Leichardt Bowl, Sydney, on 16th December 1978.
Below is the Secretary's report from the 1st Annual General Meeting.
FEDERATION OF AUSTRALIAN TENPIN BOWLERS
SECRETARY'S REPORT 1979
The Federation of Australian Tenpin Bowlers was formed in December 1978 with it’s aim to conduct inter Association annual bowling tournaments, for
Seniors and Juniors, and to introduce a new tournament to be known as the East Coast Challenge Cup. This event to be a representative teams event
for open and graded bowlers, and to be held annually during the Federation Champonships. A twelve member Committee was elected from the Greater Sydney Tenpin Bowling Association and the Melbourne Tenpin Bowling Association Ltd and included:-
Mr Bill O'Neill President
Mrs June Marks Vice President
Mr Wayne Lyons Secretary
Mr John Gilligan Treasurer
plus four members from each of the Associations.
At a meeting in July it was with regret that the Committee accepted the resignation of Bill O'Neill as President, due to his ever increasing business committments. Mrs June Marks was subsequently elected President and Mr Neil Maloney was elected Vice President. The Constitution was adopted at a meeting convened for that purpose in May, and was attended by members of both Associations.
Also in May, the Federation conducted its first Junior Championships and Junior East Coast Challenge Cup, at Box Hill Bowl in Melbourne.
The Championships proved very successful with over 200 entries, and all placegetters were presented with trophies and pins for their efforts.
The Junior East Coast Challenge Cup was won by the Melbourne teams, and each bowler was presented with a medallion specially struck for the
occasion. Next year the Junior Championships will be held in Sydney, and the Committee is confident of even greater success and enthusiasm from
the Junior bowlers.
Leichhardt Bowl was the venue for the Senior Championships, and entries were most encouraging with over 700 in all, including a contingent of over
100 competitors from Melbourne.
A gala fancy dress bowling "gig-a-loo" teams event for the opening night received an enthusiastic response from the bowlers.
This was a first for tournament bowling in this country and added to the social fellowship of the tournament.
The Committee decided to include a "graded" Masters event during the Championships, to provide greater incentive and A Presentation Dinner held
at the completion of the tournament, proved most successful, all prizes were presented and the East Coast Challenge Cup presented to the winning Association. Melbourne won both Cups and they will be on display around the Centres.
The foundation of the F.A.T.B. has been nurtured by the G.S.T.B.A. and M.T.B.A. Ltd. and strengthened by the support of their bowlers.
The Committee looks forward to continued progress and growth through 1980 with an increase in affiliated Associations, thus providing greater interest
in promotion of the sport of tenpin bowling, throughout Australia.
